The longer read:

For decades, the sight of an Atlantic bluefin tuna off the coast of Devon or Cornwall would have been remarkable. Once common in British waters, these enormous and powerful fish virtually disappeared for more than half a century, largely because of severe overfishing across the North Atlantic. Today, however, the bluefin tuna is making a remarkable comeback in the South West.

During the summer and autumn months, increasing numbers of bluefin tuna are now being spotted hunting shoals of fish in waters around Devon and Cornwall. Growing populations of their prey, alongside improved international fisheries management and catch limits, are thought to have contributed to their return. Warmer sea temperatures may also be influencing where the tuna and their prey are found.

Opportunity Charters is proud to be licensed for Catch and Release. We give our customers all of the thrill of the chase, the fight and the catch, with that all important measurement and photograph. Then safely release the fish back into the wild to live and fight another day. It takes careful fish handling, and onboard Charlie Boy, we know just how to do that. Its the responsible way to hunt and fish for Bluefin Tuna and none of the thrill or excitement is lost.

The comeback has generated considerable excitement among fishermen, scientists and wildlife enthusiasts. Research programmes led by organisations including Cefas and the universities of Exeter and Plymouth have been tagging tuna to understand their movements, how long they remain in British waters and whether the same fish return each year. Acoustic tagging has already provided valuable information about their movements around the South West and across the English Channel.
