Deep Sea Angling and Sports Fishing for Shark
Opportunity Charters offers angling for sharks in Devon and Cornwall, based in the Southwest of the UK. It is possible to catch a variety of shark species, including some of the more iconic and challenging ones such as Blue Sharks and Porbeagle sharks. Our 'Catch and Release' licence ensures we can safely and legally offer deep-sea fishing excursions for these iconic fish, reached at speed on our specialist boat. Plymouth is an ideal base for angling for Shark and Tuna with equal access to the waters off the Devon and Cornwall Coasts. All our Skippers are fully qualified, experienced, safe and knowledgeable about sports angling.
Our Sports Fishing Boat "Charlie Boy" is equipped with state-of-the-art big game tackle. You just need to turn up. We use both bait and chumming to attract the sharks. Our Fishing Trips
We are passionate about deep sea fishing and sports angling and hooked on the challenge and excitement of deep sea fishing for the apex predators Bluefin Tuna and Shark. Our rates offer excellent value for money. The boat charter cost is £800-1000 per day, including all equipment which is of the highest standard. Up to four people can join the charter for that inclusive price. Tuna angling trips last around ten hours a day, but longer can be booked if required
Many of customers like to book as a group for two or three days but if you only have time for one day, that is fine too – we are confident you will be hooked on the adrenaline and want to come back for more!
Our Accomodation
In addition, we can offer packages that can include meet and greet and accommodation at our own shore side cottage, only let to our angling customers, at Hexton Quay. The single storey studio cottage, when booked with an angling package, is £150 per night. All you need to do is turn up for what will be a memorable experience that you and your companions will be talking about for years.

Further Information About Shark Fishing & Their Conservation
Plymouth (Devon) – Plymouth is a well-established base for shark fishing, especially targeting blue sharks and the occasional porbeagle.
The biggest shark caught by an angling boat in Devon is believed to be a porbeagle shark that weighed around 500 pounds (about 227 kg). This massive catch occurred in 2021, and the shark was caught off the coast of Plymouth, which we operate from.
Porbeagle sharks are the largest species regularly targeted by anglers in the region and are known for their strong fighting ability and size. They can grow up to 12 feet (3.7 meters) long, with some individuals reaching weights of over 500 pounds, as in the case of the 2021 catch.
About the Blue Shark (Prionace glauca)
The blue shark is in a healthy population state around the south-western coasts of Cornwall and Devon. These sharks are known for their striking blue colour and are often considered a thrilling challenge for anglers. They typically inhabit deeper offshore waters but come close to shore during the summer months. These sharks, although generally smaller than the largest porbeagles, can also reach impressive sizes, sometimes over 350 pounds.
About the Porbeagle Shark (Lamna nasus) The porbeagle shark is often compared to the great white shark in appearance, but it is smaller and less aggressive. They are found in colder waters, and fishing for them typically requires venturing a bit farther offshore. They are powerful fighters and can be a real challenge to catch.
Shark Fishing Regulations and Conservation:
- Catch and Release: Most shark fishing in the UK is catch and release. This approach ensures the conservation of shark populations, as many species of sharks, particularly blue and porbeagle sharks, are vulnerable to overfishing. Anglers are encouraged to handle sharks carefully and return them to the water promptly, our experienced skippers know just how to do this.
- Shark Conservation Zones: Certain areas may have specific conservation measures in place to protect sharks, such as no-take zones or regulations regarding fishing gear, to reduce the impact on shark populations. Shark Angling:
- Chartering a boat with us offers your best chance of a catch as we are familiar with local waters and knows where to find the best shark fishing spots. We also provide the necessary equipment, bait, and safety protocols.
- Baiting: Shark fishing typically uses live bait or dead bait such as mackerel, bluefish, or other oily fish. Chumming (spreading fish parts or blood in the water) can also be effective to attract sharks. We use a mixture of both.
- Tackle: Shark fishing requires strong tackle to handle the power of these large fish. Expect to use heavy-duty rods, reels, all supplied and state of the art.
